A note from the owners:
Welcome to our cabin! We hope you will come and that you will return year after year. My great aunt and uncle, Lillie and Edgar Goodlett, operated cabins in Ephraim and had families who would come back to rent every year!
My wife, Sally, and I are retired teachers living in northern Minnesota. Our family history in Door County (Ephraim) goes back quite a way which helps explain why we would own a place so far from home! If you are interested in history, you can see the log cabin that my great, great grandfather, Thomas Goodlettson built about 1855 standing in the Ephraim Museum. My sister lives in Ephraim, many cousins live around the peninsula, and our daughter lives in Milwaukee, which also played an important part in building in Door County. Our dream cabin was finished in fall of 2022 and we are so pleased with how it turned out! We are so fortunate to enjoy 10 acres in the middle of a beautiful 40-acre woods!
Our original intent when building our place was to restack old logs from a historic cabin that we dismantled near Minneapolis. To make a long story short, we ended up 'skinnying' the logs, and built a conventional stick-built home with the Great Room paneled in old logs, highlighted with a Door County stone fireplace. We love it!
We hope you enjoy your stay in our cabin!
Dave and Sally
Recommendations:
We love Peninsula State Park and often ride our bikes down County Road A into the Park. There are all sorts of beautiful hikes and bike rides in the Park and around Door County. Bike rentals in Fish Creek are available if needed, and you can also rent bikes, kayaks, paddleboards, etc. at the Nicolet Bay Beach in the Park. We like having lunch at the Peninsula Golf Course clubhouse after a round of golf, as there are picturesque views of Eagle Harbor from there!
Fish boils are a delicious part of a Door County visit. We recommend the Old Post Office in Ephraim and the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek. Call ahead for reservations!
There are all sorts of cultural offerings on The Peninsula. The Peninsula Music Festival, The Clearing, Birch Creek Jazz, Shakespeare Door, Write On Door County, and offerings at the Door County Auditorium are among the many great choices! Consult the Pulse for events, dates and times!
If you haven't been to Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant in Sister Bay, it is worth the trip, and the Fika (on #42 near the YMCA) cardamom rolls are amazing. Honestly, there are so many great coffee shops and restaurants up and down the Peninsula, it's impossible to begin to list them!
More about the construction of this home:
Many thanks to Sam Hooper and his crew from Little Alaska Log Homes, roofer Carlos Torres and his crew from down the road, fireplace builder Larry Nelson from Grand Rapids, MN, and fourth generation log home builder Darrel Zak from Bailey's Harbor for all of their help and expertise.
